Literature Unit Studies for Homeschool Families

Literature unit studies organize learning around a book, story, author, or central theme. Instead of treating subjects as unrelated, children can use a shared text to practice reading and writing while exploring connected ideas in science, math, art, history, civics, and character. This approach helps learners see how knowledge relates across disciplines and gives families a more cohesive way to plan lessons.

The School House homeschool program offers the American Emergent Curriculum for learners from Pre-K through 8th grade, generally serving children about ages 3 to 12. Families can use the curriculum to create developmentally appropriate learning experiences while following the same connected, literature-informed approach. Parent educators can adapt pacing, discussion, and hands-on activities to their child’s readiness and interests.

The curriculum is organized in eight-week sessions. This format gives learners time to spend meaningful time with a topic rather than rushing through short, disconnected lessons. Over each session, families can revisit ideas through reading, discussion, writing, printables, and related activities. The extended structure supports deeper exploration while giving parents a clear framework for organizing the homeschool year.

The School House curriculum connects reading and writing with math, science, art, entrepreneurship, civics, gratitude, and kindness. Rather than presenting these as fully separate subjects, lessons are designed to show children how skills and ideas work together. This integrated approach can make learning feel more relevant while still helping families build a broad academic foundation across the school year.

Yes. Enrollment includes access to more than 400 educator training films that help parent educators prepare to teach the material. Families also receive live weekly educator and founder support sessions with Q&A, recorded sessions for later viewing, and separately scheduled office hours. These resources are designed to help parents understand lessons, build a prepared learning environment, and teach with greater confidence.

Families can use Transparent Classroom, The School House progress and portfolio tool, to document a learner’s work and development. Portfolio tracking creates an organized record of projects, lessons, and progress over time, which can be useful for family reflection and homeschool documentation. It also supports the program’s personalized reporting approach without requiring parents to manage every record manually.

Both enrollment plans include curriculum content, printables and lesson materials, educator training films, Transparent Classroom access, live weekly support, and the School House Member Community. Physical TSH Materials Boxes are optional and purchased separately. This lets families choose whether they prefer to source materials independently or add physical resources to support hands-on learning at home.

The homeschool program is priced per learner at $125 per month for 10 monthly payments during the school year, or $1,200 when paid annually in one upfront payment. Both options include the same program features; the difference is payment timing. Optional physical materials boxes are available separately, and the open Mighty Networks community is free to join.
