Hands-On Animal Science Activities for Learners

A strong high school animal science curriculum should cover biology foundations, anatomy and physiology, nutrition, genetics, health, welfare, behavior, and agricultural or veterinary applications. Five foundational animal science topics are animal anatomy and physiology, nutrition, genetics and reproduction, health and disease prevention, and behavior and welfare. Learners also commonly study classification, life cycles, habitats, ecosystems, and the relationships between animals and people. Hands-on activities can make these topics more concrete by inviting children to observe, compare, record evidence, and discuss what they discover.

The School House Anywhere homeschool curriculum is designed for learners roughly ages 3 to 12, spanning Pre-K through 8th grade. Lessons are organized in eight-week sessions and can be adapted through discussion, writing, reading, and hands-on extensions. Parents can use educator training films, printables, and live support to tailor the learning experience to a child’s readiness and interests.

Hands-on activities help learners move from passive recall to active inquiry. Observing feathers, comparing animal structures, mapping habitats, or recording life-cycle changes builds vocabulary, attention to detail, and evidence-based reasoning. These activities can also strengthen reading and writing when children use field guides, create labels, keep journals, and explain their conclusions. Adult guidance helps ensure activities are safe, respectful, and developmentally appropriate.

No formal science background is required to begin. The curriculum includes 400+ educator training films, lesson materials, printables, and live weekly support to help parents understand and present each activity. A prepared learning environment, clear questions, and a willingness to explore alongside a learner are often more important than prior subject expertise. Families can also use the member community for additional ideas and encouragement.

Many activities can begin with everyday supplies such as notebooks, pencils, magnifiers, measuring tools, printable charts, library books, and safe natural objects like fallen leaves or feathers. Some families may choose optional TSH Materials Boxes separately. Materials should match the lesson and learner’s age, and activities involving live animals, food, or outdoor observation should always include appropriate adult supervision and hygiene practices.

The School House Anywhere program includes Transparent Classroom, a progress and portfolio tool that helps parents document learning over time. Families can record completed work, save samples, note observations, and create a clearer picture of a learner’s development. Maintaining a portfolio is particularly useful for reflecting on growth, planning next steps, and keeping organized records that may be needed for local homeschool reporting requirements.

The homeschool program is offered at $125 per month per learner across 10 monthly payments, or $1,200 per learner when paid annually.
